The University understands that there can be financial difficulties for students, and we will do what we can to help. The most important thing if you’re struggling is to reach out to us via the Student Hub Portal to let us know you’re struggling.

Our Student Financial Regulations and Refund and Compensation Policy can be found on our Finance Page for Students.

What if I cannot pay my tuition fees on time?

Any student who is concerned that they will not be able to pay their fees on time must let the University know via the Student Hub Portal. Please note, the University will not offer any amendments to fee due dates or change the instalments.

If you are in receipt of funding from the Student Loans Company but there has been a delay in your application please let us know via the Student Hub Portal.

If you are not in receipt of funding from the Student Loans Company - you should make payment for as much as possible, as soon as possible. If you do this, you should make payment for hundreds of pounds and not small amounts, and should then make further payments as soon as possible to clear the remaining balance. For example, if you have a £2000 instalment due you could make a £1000 payment by the deadline, and should make subsequent payments asap after the deadline has passed to fully clear the balance.

What if I cannot pay my accommodation fees on time?

If you are in receipt of funding from the Student Loans Company but your maintenance loan has been delayed please let us know via the Student Hub Portal. Dependent on when you are due to pay your accommodation fees, you may need to contact your bank to stop the Direct Debit collection.

If you are not in receipt of funding from the Student Loans Company – as with tuition fees you should make payment for as much as possible, as soon as possible. If you do this, you should make payment for hundreds of pounds and not small amounts, and should then make further payments as soon as possible to clear the remaining balance.

Exceptional financial circumstances

The University understands that there can be occasions where things happen that are beyond your control, and these might affect your ability to pay your fees.

If something truly unforeseeable happens after you start studying, the University may be able to allow you more time to pay your fees but will not make amendments to your payment schedule. You should still aim to pay on time, wherever possible, and should pay as much of your outstanding balance as possible if you can’t meet the deadline.

If you are impacted by significant, unforeseen circumstances that impact your ability to pay your fees, please raise a case via the Student Hub Portal, providing information in support of your request for consideration.

Where possible the Finance Team will consider you having more time to pay your fees. If you are having issues with your mental health or wellbeing, you can access support from the Wellbeing Team by completing the Wellbeing Self-Referral Form.  Please note that the Wellbeing Team have no involvement in decisions regarding your payment deadlines.

What might happen if I do not pay on time?

Where there is continued non-payment of tuition fees, the University reserves the right to apply sanctions to students. This can include:

  • removing access to the learning platforms (e.g. Moodle; TurnItIn; the library’s online system)

  • removing access to YSJ emails; attendance monitoring; the Student Hub Portal

  • withdrawal from study

  • withdrawal of sponsorship & subsequent curtailment of student visa

  • withholding of qualification certificates/transcripts

  • not being permitted to attend your graduation ceremony

  • eviction from University accommodation (for accommodation debt)

Outstanding debt can also prevent you re-enrolling into your next year of studies. This can impact students studying on campus and students moving into a placement year.
