What are professional placements?

Professional placements in a general term used where a PSRB (Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body) help set the parameters of the placement. In practice at York St John, this means placements in programmes that are supported by the Placements Team. The programmes supported by the Placement Team are:

School of Education, Language and Psychology

  • Initial Teacher Education – undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

  • Early Years Education and Care (with Graduate Competencies).

School of Science, Technology and Health

  • Diagnostic Radiography.

  • Midwifery.

  • Occupational Therapy – undergraduate and postgraduate.

  • Operating Departmental Practice.

  • Paramedic Science.

  • Physiotherapy - undergraduate and postgraduate.

  • Speech and Language Therapy.

How are these different from other placements?

Professional placements are not the only placement activities that occur across programmes. Many programmes will have work experience modules, and some programmes have placement year/year in industry modules built in. These are not professional placements in the same way the placements in the programmes above are due to PSRB requirements.

Non-professional placements are not supported by the Placement Team but help for potential work experience/placement year opportunities can be found through the Careers and Opportunities Team: opportunities@yorksj.ac.uk

What activities do the Placement Team support?

The Placement Team provides different support across the above programmes depending on the requirements of the course. The list below provides a guide to the activities covered but it is not exhaustive:

  • Placement sourcing and allocation.

  • Expenses processing.

  • Placement travel and logistics.

  • Timesheet and hours recording.

  • Placement systems support.
