Study Abroad students do not pay additional tuition fees while abroad. As each experience is different, we cannot therefore advise you specifically on how much your experience will cost. Some host universities may require you to cover specific costs, such as meal plans, private insurance, and orientation fees, though this will be confirmed by your host university.
There are some travel-related costs you will need to pay, regardless of where you go, such as medical assessments, flights and visas. Before you study abroad, it is important to consider how you will meet the costs and how much these might be. Useful areas for consideration include:
- Additional travel to and from your host university alongside flight costs.
- Accommodation, some including meal plans.
- Visa costs.
- General living costs.
- Textbooks and other relevant materials.
- Insurance.
- Travelling within the host country and beyond.
It is worth nothing that not all of these costs apply to each university and will vary country to country.
To see which costs specifically apply to you, consult the breakdown shown in the Knowledge Article(s) related to your host university options (please see Knowledge Articles on Study Abroad Destinations and Study Abroad Host University Details).
To help you meet these costs, check to see if you're eligible for funding.
Is there funding available for studying abroad?
YSJU Bursary / Turing Scheme
Yes, all students who study abroad will receive a minimum grant of £750, subject to satisfying grant conditions. This will be from either the York St John Bursary or the Turing Scheme, the UK government's global programme to study and work abroad. We will notify students in the Summer prior to departure of funding details.
Student Finance England Travel Grant
You may be able to claim back some travel expenses from your period abroad. The amount of grant depends on your household income, and it covers reasonable costs incurred on travel expenses during the academic year, such as flights and visa. Please visit the Student Finance England Travel Grant website or contact Student Finance England.
Student Loan
If you are a student loan recipient, you will also still receive your maintenance loan as normal, though you may be eligible for a higher amount depending on your circumstances.

Each year British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (Butex) award a number of £500 scholarships to students studying abroad.
