Applying for Study Abroad is a double application process. You initially need to apply to the YSJU Study Abroad programme and if you are successful, you will then apply to your host university later in the academic year.
In order to be considered for the programme, you need to meet the selection criteria below:
- 50% minimum average mark (credit-weighted)
- Submission of application form and personal statement by application deadline
- Academic reference to support application
Applications for our 26/27 Study Abroad programme are open from 5 December 2025 until 9 January 2026.
Step-by-step guide to application
- Make sure you have done thorough research so you know where and when you can go abroad with your course. For guidance see our article about getting started. You can access this via our HELP Page: I'm Interested, What Do I Do Now?
- Research how much it will cost to go abroad and consider how you can budget / save to meet these costs.
- Speak to specialist support services such as wellbeing and disability if necessary so you can discuss your support needs abroad.
- Make sure you have a valid passport and if not, make sure you are in the process of applying for / renewing your passport so you will have it ready if you gain a place on the study abroad programme.
- Access the link to the Study Abroad application form on the Study Abroad Website from 5 December 2025 (link to website).
- Complete personal details on the form
- Select which semester you would like to study abroad. If your course allows more than one possibility, you can choose more than one option. If your course only allows you to study abroad in Semester 1, you can only select this Semester.
- Select your top three host university destinations. If your course only offers one or two destinations, you do not need to put three options down. If your course offers three or more choices, we highly recommend you select three options as this will give you more chance of obtaining a place on the study abroad programme.
- Fully answer the three questions in the Personal Statement. The word limit is 500 words in total for all three questions, not per question. Please make sure you put some thought and effort into your answers and do not use AI. You can also submit this section as a video if you prefer. Please send your video to studyabroad@yorksj.ac.uk by the deadline.
- Once you are happy with your application, and all questions are answered, please make sure you press submit.
- You will find out if you have been successful in early March. Good luck!
