- different types of jobs
- how to apply, and
- what visa options you may need.
Getting Started with Graduate Job Hunting
Looking for your first graduate role doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right approach and mindset, it can be a valuable and even enjoyable step toward your future career. Whether you're in your final year or recently graduated, this is a great time to explore opportunities that align with your skills, interests, and long-term goals.
You don’t need to land your dream job straight away. Many graduates start with roles that act as stepping stones, these are positions that help you build experience, grow professionally, and develop key skills for the future. What matters is choosing opportunities that allow you to learn, develop, and move forward.
Finding the right role takes time, and it’s important to spend that time well. Take the opportunity to research different sectors, companies, and job types. Reflect on your own strengths, values, and areas you want to develop. The more you understand what you’re looking for and what you can offer, the better placed you’ll be to make informed choices.
Types of jobs you can apply for
There are many kinds of jobs available in the UK. Some are made for students who have just graduated, and others are open to people with more experience.
Graduate schemes
Graduate schemes are special training programmes for students who have recently finished university. They are usually with big companies and last between 1 and 3 years.
- Jobs are often in areas like business, finance, engineering, or IT.
- You usually apply between September and January (a year before the job starts).
- Some companies offer visa sponsorship – always check this before applying.

Entry-level or junior jobs
These jobs are often called ‘assistant’, ‘coordinator’, or ‘junior’ roles. They are good if you do not have much work experience.
- You can apply for these jobs all year round.
- These jobs may not always offer visa sponsorship.
- Make sure your CV shows your skills, studies, and any internships or part-time work.
- Small and medium-sized companies often offer these roles.
Skilled or senior jobs
- If you already have work experience, you may be able to apply for more senior jobs.
- You will need to show strong work experience and knowledge in your field.
- Some jobs are on the UK’s ‘Shortage Occupation List’, which means the UK needs more workers in those areas.
- These jobs are more likely to offer Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.
