It is important to plan how you will fund your Study Abroad experience.

You will need to plan how you will meet the costs. Think about:

  • Travel to and from your host, including flight costs
  • Accommodation
  • Visa costs
  • Living costs
  • Course books

Grants

All students who study abroad will receive a minimum grant of £750, subject to satisfying grant conditions. This will be from either the York St John University Bursary or the Turing Scheme.

Turing Scheme

The Turing Scheme is the UK government's global programme to study and work abroad.

The scheme provides funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. Certain students are eligible for this scheme, subject to funding allocated each year. Grants are between £12 to £18 per day. Students from less advantaged backgrounds may also receive additional funding toward flights and travel related costs.

Those who receive Turing Scheme funding, and who have a physical, mental or health condition, can also receive up to 100% of actual costs for support directly related to their additional needs.

Student Maintenance Loan

If you are in receipt of a maintenance loan, you will continue to receive this as usual when you are abroad but you may also be eligible for a higher amount, depending on your circumstances.

Student Finance England Travel Grant

You may be able to claim back some travel expenses from your period abroad. The amount of grant depends on your household income and it covers reasonable costs incurred on travel expenses during an academic year. Please visit the Student Finance England Travel Grant website or contact Student Finance England

BUTEX Scholarship

Each year BUTEX (British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association) award a number of £500 scholarships to students studying outside Europe for a semester or a year.

For more information and to apply, please visit the BUTEX website.

Tuition fees

All students who study abroad for a year will receive an 85% discount on 2024 / 2025 tuition fees.

Tuition fees are not payable to host institutions.

Visas

Please make sure you have an up-to-date passport that expires no earlier than 6 months after you intend to return.

Most destinations require you to have a visa. The cost and process of applying for a visa is your responsibility and varies depending on your destination.

You will be provided with guidance from your host university once you are accepted onto the programme.
