Finding sources and referencing them

Completing assignments successfully requires:

  • finding sources, data, evidence, and knowledge to support your thinking and writing, and
  • acknowledging the ideas that belong to others

Take charge of your own academic development. As you progress through your studies, you should develop your skills and process in finding sources and referencing them.

As a York St John University student, you are expected to develop your information skills so that you can find and ethically use any information you find.

You will need to:

  • use research tools such as library catalogues and search tools
  • develop your skills in using these efficiently and effectively to find information, and
  • learn how to reference where you borrow ideas and information from

Each assignment might need different kinds of information, and your course will use a specific style of referencing, so it is essential that you develop your skills to meet your assignment outcomes. Use our self-development tools to help you.

We have 2 types of support available:

  • Searching and referencing self-development resources, and
