An Estranged Student is any home undergraduate student under the age of 25 who is irreconcilably estranged from their parents and has no verbal or written communication with either parent, and where this situation is unlikely to change.

At York St John we are committed to supporting students who are estranged from their families and provide support throughout the whole of your journey, from application to graduation, to ensure you get the most out of your University experience.

All estranged students are offered 1 to 1 advice and support throughout your time as a student from a dedicated adviser.

If you have been recognised as an estranged student by Student Finance England, or an equivalent organisation, you will be eligible for additional financial support such as the YSJ Scholars scholarship and the Find Your Future bursary. We can also help you confirm your estranged status when applying (or re-applying) for student finance.

Estranged students are guaranteed accommodation all year round if you would like it. You will also be prioritised if you apply to return to University accommodation after first year.

If you wish to speak to someone about the support available to care leavers then you can book an appointment with a Specialist Support Adviser.
