Find a course
Postgraduate Taught
Postgraduate Taught degrees include MA and MSc courses. They are similar in structure to undergraduate level. The modules you study will usually involve lectures, seminars, and assignments. You can find a full list on our Postgraduate Taught Courses web page.
Research degrees
Postgraduate Research degrees, such as PhD or Masters by Research courses, are independent in nature. You will research a topic of your choice in depth while working with a supervisor. You can find more details on the different types of Research degrees that we offer on our Research web pages.
Entry requirements
For postgraduate courses, entry requirements vary per course. You can find the specific entry requirements for each course on our website course pages.
Entry requirements will usually include an undergraduate degree with a specific final grade minimum, and, for some courses, this is required to be in a relevant subject.
You can make an application before you have your final degree result, as long as this will be awarded before the beginning of your postgraduate course start date.
Some postgraduate courses will also request additional requirements, which can include a piece of written work, a portfolio, non-academic conditions (such as a Disclosure and Barring Service [DBS] or medical check), or specific qualifications.
Most Research Degrees will require a full research proposal.
How to apply
When applications are open for a specific course, the application link will be live on the course page. The application process is a direct application form which you can save and complete in stages. You will need to create an application login using a personal email account. Please do not use your -@yorksj.ac.uk- email address.
To complete the form, you will need:
- details of your qualifications
- your employment and work experience history, where relevant
- a personal statement, and
- contact details for your referees.
For some taught courses, you may need to submit extra material, such as a portfolio.
Intakes and deadlines
Most of our Postgraduate Taught courses start teaching in September and are open to applications in October/November for the following year. These will usually remain open to applications until the course start date, as long as the course has space available. However, some courses do have specific application windows or mid-year start dates. These will always be detailed on the course page.
Most Research Degrees have multiple intakes per year. Application deadlines and the steps to apply can be found on our Research Degree pages. Before applying for our Research Degrees, we suggest that you read this web page thoroughly, as you will need to identify a research supervisor, and write your research proposal, prior to application.
Next steps
Once we receive your application, the relevant Admissions team will be in touch with you to discuss the next steps. Many of our postgraduate applications go through an academic review process and you may be invited to an interview.
Once a decision is made on your application, you will be contacted by the Admissions team with the outcome. You will likely be made a conditional offer, which will usually include achieving a specific grade or higher in your current degree studies. As a current student, these results should be visible to the Admissions team when awarded, but you will still need to notify your Admissions team.
Once you have met all conditions, your details will be sent to our Registry team for enrolment prior to the start of your course. The Registry team will then email you your enrolment instructions.
