The below information is aimed at our International students.
There is a lot to do in your first few days in the UK as an International student studying with us, and we have put together a quick checklist of the essential things you need to do.
Call home!
Your friends and family will want to know you have arrived safely.
Enrolment
Make sure you have uploaded all the correct documents on to Cas Shield and that you have fully enrolled as a student. You must also attend your face-to-face enrolment on campus with the Visa and Compliance team, as well as with our Student Records team, to complete your right to study checks and be fully enrolled. You will need to complete the entire enrolment process to have access to University services and be eligible to start your course.
Get academically ready
You should check your timetable early on, so you know where you need to be and when. You can find your timetable on the MyYSJ app. You should also sign into, and get to understand, Moodle. This is where you can access course materials and other University information. It is compulsory to attend your academic induction session. You will have been sent details of this by email.
Get financially ready.
If you have tuition fees to pay, you should pay these immediately. You should also take a little time to think about managing your finances in the UK with Blackbullion.com's financial education courses and resources. You can create a free account, using the access code 'YSJ-Int'. You will also want to open a UK bank account.
Get insurance.
To keep your possessions safe, you should arrange insurance. If you are living in University accommodation, some insurance is included, so you should check what you have covered. The University uses a company called Endsleigh, and you can buy further insurance from Endsleigh or any other provider.
Register with the NHS.
You will need to register with the National Health Service, usually referred to as the NHS. The NHS offers free health care in the UK. You can do this through our York St John Student Health Centre.
Explore your new home.
York is a beautiful city and is consistently voted one of the top cities by UK residents and tourists. Take the opportunity to go and explore. Why not ask one of your new friends to join you?- During the welcome period, you can join city tours from the Global Campus team. However, it is also very easy to explore by yourself. York is a small and friendly city, and York St John University is right in the heart of it. If you get lost, just ask someone - the locals are friendly and will point you in the right direction of where you need to go!
