Accessing Westlaw or Practical Law

As a student on a Law course at York St John University, you will need to use Westlaw or Practical Law to research legal information; such as, case law, legislation, and legal commentaries.

The most common problems you could have when accessing Westlaw or Practical Law are:

  • you are trying to access Westlaw or Practical Law from an internet search engine, instead of via the Library
  • you do not have a valid registration key

Accessing Westlaw or Practical Law through the Library

Library & Learning Services has a subscription to Westlaw and Practical Law which means you must access it through us. Our access web address verifies to Westlaw / Practical Law that you are a York St John University student. Follow our web address and use your University login details to log in.

Access Westlaw and Practical Law through Subject Specialist Resources.

The first time you access Westlaw or Practical Law, you will need to create a OnePass Profile to finish the registration process. This creates your user profile which allows you to access Westlaw and Practical Law off-campus. To create an account:

  • on the Westlaw log-in screen, click "Create OnePass profile" at the bottom
  • use your York St John University email address to create an account.

If the web address or the OnePass registration form is not working for you, please email the Library at library@yorksj.ac.uk.

Registration keys

When logging into Westlaw or Practical Law, you may encounter the following error message:

-        Your profile contains no valid registration keys. Contact your administrator for assistance or sign in to OnePass to manage your profile.

This can occur when there is something we need to fix in your Westlaw or Practical Law account.
