Making the most of your library when away from campus
Are you a commuting student? On placement? Away from campus for the vacation?
There are still a variety of ways you can access library resources and make the most of what your library can offer.
Online Resources
You have access to hundreds of thousands of ebooks, journal articles and databases through our library catalogue.
The library website contains useful guides on how to access these.
- Accessing ebooks
- Accessing and searching for journals and articles
- Specialist subject resources (databases)
Library, study and digital skills support
Just because you are away from campus does not mean that you cannot access support and guidance from the Library team.
From booking online tutorials with an Academic Liaison Librarian, Digital Trainer or Study Development Tutor, to accessing guides and self-help resources, all the information you need is on the Library, study and digital skills help section of the website.
Postal loans (York campus students)
Postal loans is a service where items can be requested and sent to you, in the UK, via post.
Who can use postal loans
You can register for our postal loans service if you:
- live in the UK
- are a registered student studying a course based at our York campus, and
- live, or are on placement, outside of the YO1, YO10, YO23, YO24, YO26, YO30, YO31, YO32 postcodes, or
- are registered for our Accessibility Support service
We will not charge you when we send you books. However, you are responsible for returning the books to the library. You can do this either in person (free of charge) or by paying the postage to return them by post.
Signing up
If you meet the above requirements, you can register for postal loans by emailing library@yorksj.ac.uk. Please include the address you would like to have items sent to.
Once registered, anything you request in the library catalogue will automatically be posted to you. You will not have the option to pick up requested resources from campus. However, you can still visit the library to:
- study
- borrow non-reserved items from our shelves, or
- return items
Requesting Items
As a postal loans borrower, you are entitled to have a maximum of 30 items sent to you per year.
You can request physical items using the library catalogue:
- Use your student number and PIN to log in to your library account
- Use the search box at the top of the page to find the item you want in the catalogue
- Select the green Request Postal Loan button on the record of the item
Items will then be automatically posted to you as they become available. There may be a small delay if the item you have requested is on loan, but we will inform you by email if this is the case.
Printed materials, DVDs, and CDs are included in the service, but we cannot post laptops and other electronic equipment or Reference Only items.
If you require an article from one of our print journals, we can scan and send this to you as part of the postal loan service.
To submit a request for a scanned journal article, please use the Postal loan scanning request form.
Returning Items
You are responsible for returning books by their due date. The easiest way to return items is to return them in person to the Fountains Library when you are on campus. Alternatively, you can return them to us by post.
To return items to us using a postal service:
- you must send items back at least 1 day before their due date
- package up your books securely and carefully label the package
- address your package to:
Library & Learning Services
York St John University
Lord Mayor-s Walk
YO31 7EX
Remember to keep your proof of postage. You will need this as evidence of your return, including the date the items were posted.
If you have any questions about returning your items, please email library@yorksj.ac.uk.
