DBS process for current students
If you are a current student and are organising your work experience, or you have lined up some volunteering and the organisation requires you to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, then the Student Opportunities team can help you with obtaining a DBS.
You must secure your place at the organisation where you required the DBS, before we can process your request.
A DBS check helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevents unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. DDC Ltd is the appointed Criminal Record Checking partner for York St John University. They are the quality assured registered umbrella body for the Disclosure and Barring Service.
If you are changing where you are going for your work experience or volunteering, and you already have a DBS, then it is best to check with the organisation themselves before submitting a new DBS request.
How to apply for a DBS
Please read all the instructions on how to apply for a DBS on our DBS checks web page. You will need to read carefully all emails sent to you from the Student Opportunities team and DDC about the process. Make sure you have the correct ID and, if you are unable to do a digital check, you will need to make an appointment (via Handshake) to come onto campus to have your 3 original ID documents checked.
We use a company called DDC to process the DBS. You can contact them if you have any queries once you have your DDC login from us.
We cannot guarantee a timeframe for when you will receive your DBS certificate, so please request one as early as possible to avoid issues.
What happens if I am a professional placement student?
If you are a professional placement student, then contact your placement team in the first instance if you have issues with your DBS. Charges now apply to replace a DBS if you have had one issued already by York St John University.
DBS update
We highly recommend you sign up to the DBS Update Service at the time you receive your DBS.
The Disclosure and Barring Service offer an update service for standard and enhanced DBS certificates, whereby you can pay an annual fee to keep your certificate up-to-date and allow employers to check a DBS certificate. You must register for the Update Service within 28 days of the certificate being issued.
