Compensation is an assessment practice that allows a marginal (minimal) failure in a module to be compensated by your performance in the other modules taken for the level. If you are eligible to compensate a module failure, you will be awarded credit for the module. This will be for the purposes of progression to your next level of study or for your award.

To be eligible to compensate a module failure, there are specific requirements you need to meet. These include specifications for:

  • The module mark range eligible for compensation
  • Limitations to the number of credits that can be compensated per level
  • The need to have obtained a minimum credit weighted average mark for the level
  • That the module must not be exempt from compensation

These requirements are covered in more detail in the following policies which can be found in the Code of Practice for Assessment

  • Marking scales and assessment conventions
  • Undergraduate Progression
  • Postgraduate Award

If you have questions about compensation, and how it relates to your course, you should talk to your Programme/Course Lead.
