The Special Cases Panel (SCP) looks at individual student cases when a School asks for a different decision from what the School Assessment Boards would normally make. Schools may decide to put forward an application to the SCP for students that are facing significant challenges with their studies (for example, they are in hospital and are unable to apply for exceptional circumstances themselves).

The policy for the Special Cases Panel can be found in the Code of Practice for Assessment

How long does the SCP take to reach a decision?

It takes around 2 to 3 weeks, on average, for the SCP to review a case and reach a decision. However, this is only a guide. Sometimes, they may only need a week.

For particularly complex cases, it can sometimes take several weeks for them to decide on an outcome to a request. This is especially the case if they need to ask for further information or evidence to support the School-s request.

How does the SCP let people know the outcome of the School-s request?

After the SCP makes a decision about a School's request, they will send an email to the student, the person in the School who made the request, and any other relevant staff members who need to be informed. This email will contain a letter explaining what the SCP has decided.
