Accommodation for commuting students at our York Campus
If you need to be on campus for an early morning, avoid the rush-hour traffic by staying overnight in an en-suite room at our commuter flat, 49 Clarence Street.
49 Clarence Street is just a few minutes- walk from our York campus.- The flat has shared kitchen facilities with an oven, microwave, toaster, kettle and basic utensils to use during your stay. Bedding is provided however any other toiletries or appliances must be brought with you.
The cost per night is £25.00
This accommodation can be booked for 3 nights a week maximum and is allocated on a first come first serve basis. You must submit your request with a minimum of 2 working days- notice to allow the request to be processed.
As this accommodation is limited, we will not process block/multiple bookings at once. Rooms can be booked up to a month in advance for the current or following month only.
To make a booking
To make a booking, submit a case through the Student Hub online portal with the subject "Commuting room".- Submitting the case does not guarantee accommodation. The Accommodation team will respond as soon as possible to confirm availability
Please be mindful that this accommodation is in high demand, and if you wish to cancel your booking, you should contact the Accommodation team as soon as possible.
Commuter parking
There is no on-site parking at the accommodation, however Union Terrace council car park is next to 49 Clarence Street.- If you are a blue badge holder you can use the regular spaces in this car park (please do not use any reserved spaces, or those specifically for coaches).
Parking at our other accommodation sites can still be use if you are a YSJ valid parking permit holder, and the nearest accommodation sites with parking in relation to 49 Clarence Street are City Residence and the Grange. ANPR parking systems are installed across all university accommodation sites, which automatically issues fines, therefore if you do use the car parking spaces at our accommodation sites, please ensure that your vehicle is currently registered with the university to avoid a fine.- Commuting students can apply for temporary parking for their stay via the student parking permit application form.- Please remember to confirm your term time address that you are commuting from on the form (i.e., not York), and note that the permit does not guarantee a space will be available.
Collecting and returning commuter flat keys
You can collect your keys after 1pm on the day of arrival from the Porters Lodge on campus, St Anthony's House which is across from the Fountains Library.- Opening times are Monday to Friday: 7:00am until 6:30pm.- Outside of these hours you can collect your key from the Security Office which is based at the Maclagan block, opposite our Holgate building.
Please ensure that you return the keys on the day of each departure no later than 9.00am to either the Porters Lodge or Security Office depending on the time.- If we do not receive your keys by 9.00am on the day of departure then you will be charged an additional £25.00, and if you do not return your key before 1pm then you will also be charged for lost keys at £20.00 per key, and if not returned on the day of departure, then you may also be charged for subsequent costs resulting from any necessary change of locks/keys due to non-return of keys.
The charge for your stay (£25.00 per night) will be automatically processed following collection of the keys, and you need to make payment via:

Please be aware that until you have paid for your commuting room you are not eligible to book a future commuting room, and payment needs to be made prior to departure from your booked stay.
