Reporting washing machine/dryer maintenance issues in halls of residence
As washing machines and tumble dryers in halls of residence are directly managed by WashPoint, please contact them via the methods below:
Email: service@washco.co.uk
Phone: 08000 545 546 (freephone)
When reporting a maintenance issue, please include the following:
- Your name
- The accommodation site that the issue occurred
Any reference numbers identifying the washing machine/dryer that the fault is relating to. This should be located on a sticker on the machine and helps WashPoint know which exact machine is not functioning. Issues may be resolved quicker with this information without an engineer needing to attend.
University Managed Houses
Each university managed house has a washing machine and some may have tumble dryers provided as well. There should be a manual in your accommodation explaining how to use the appliances. WashPoint do not provide washing machines in university managed houses so please disregard the advice above if you live in a university managed house.
Students will need to provide their own laundry products such as detergent and fabric conditioner but there is no additional cost of using the laundry machine or dryer (if applicable) in your accommodation.
Maintenance
Washing Machines
Please refer to the manual in your accommodation on how to use the washing machine.
- Separating your washing such as light clothes, dark clothes and material type would help your clothes last longer. Check your clothes for washing instructions to ensure that you are picking the best wash cycle for the corresponding material. Certain wash cycles can cause damage to clothes which require specific treatment. Most clothes can be washed on a 30-degree Celsius temperature while bedding may require a slightly higher temperature depending how often you wash your bedding.
- Do not overfill the washing machine drum as this can impact the effectiveness of the wash cycle. You should fill the washing machine drum ¾ maximum.
- After using the washing machine, leave the door open to allow the machine to air and dry. This will help prevent odours building up.
- Students can purchase limescale removal products to add to washes to help prevent the build-up of limescale.
- Most washing machines have a self-clean cycle. If your machine has any odours, you can set the washing machine on a self-clean. You can also purchase products to add to a self-clean cycle.
Dryers (if applicable)
Please refer to the manual in your accommodation on how to use the tumble dryer.
- Make sure the clothes you want to tumble dry can be tumble dried. This is indicated on the clothes label in your garments.
- Please check the lint trap in the machine. Lint is a mixture of loose fibres which shed from clothes and textiles especially during a wash or tumble dry and these are accumulated in the lint trap of a dryer. After each use, you should check the lint trap to clear out any lint that has accumulated. You can dispose of this in your usual waste bin. You should dispose of this regularly as if left for an extended period of time, it can become a fire hazard. The dryer will also perform more efficiently.
- When you open the dryer door, there will be a small section or handle to lift in front of you inside the door. This handle is for the lint trap. Lift the lint trap up and out of the dryer. You can then peel off the lint with your fingers. Do not rinse or wash the lint trap as wet lint is harder to remove. Once you have emptied the trap, you can replace it back in the machine. These instructions will vary per dryer make and model. You can type ‘how to empty a lint trap’ into a search engine for a rough idea on how to empty one.
- Do not overfill the dryer drum as this can impact the effectiveness of the drying cycle. You should fill the dryer drum ¾ maximum.
