Protecting yourself against rental fraud
Finding somewhere safe, convenient and affordable to live may be one of your main concerns. Unfortunately, scammers know how important student accommodation is and could try to take advantage of your need to find a home.
Never pay any fees, like a viewing fee, before viewing a property. You should not pay anything before signing a legal contract. If asked to pay upfront, it might be a scam. The property may not exist or could be rented to others simultaneously.
Only make payment once you, or a reliable contact, has visited the property with an agent or landlord and are signing a contract.
Deposits are protected and you should get them back if the property is left in good condition at the end of your tenancy. Avoid pressure to transfer large sums and be cautious about money transfer service requests.
If you have been a victim of rental fraud, you can report the scam to Action Fraud.
